Tasting of Wines of Ribera del Duero and Rueda
Ribera is Spain’s answer to Burgundy and the cradle of some of the best wines in the world!
Pedro Ballesteros Torres, Master of Wine From Decanter magazine |
When: Sunday April 8 2-4 PM
Where: Pierre Loti Chelsea. 258 West 15 St at 8th Ave
Cost: $35
Hidden in the high plains of Castilla y León in Northern Spain, the regions of Ribera del Duero and Rueda possess an unusual beauty. The landscape looks alternately like the beach, the desert or the moon. The climate is almost inhospitable to human life. But in these harsh conditions indigenous grapes such as Tempranillo and Verdejo thrive producing bold red wines of incredible depth and structure and herbaceous, aromatic whites, respectively.
The winemakers of D.O. Ribera del Duero and D.O. Rueda were locavore, artisanal, and sustainable long before those terms even existed. Their wines reflect an ancient tradition and a singular sense of place, yet have a timeless appeal that knows no borders.
On April 8 we'll have the privilege of tasting 8 wines from the regions, each introduced by the wine's producer. It will a unique opportunity to get to know these fantastic wine regions.
The wines that will be tasted will be from two of the most famous wineries in the area: Bodegas Javier Sanz, and Bodegas Alvides
